September 1998-November 1998-After finding the sticker on the thong, the first official lineup of the 40 was Cody Harris, Lead Guitar, Clay Steadman, Drums, Holly Hildebrandt, Rhythm Guitar, and Brandon Stewart on Bass. This line-up ended shortly after the October 31st show at the scout hall.
November 1998-March 1999-After discovering Holly was a better bass player, and due to a lack of motivation, Stewart was fired. The 40 was now a power trio, but during this period Jar filled in for Holly on bass while she was grounded, and played "Last Caress" at the anti-school concert on Feb. 5th
March 1999-March 2002-Jar joins the band, taking over lead guitar duties from Cody. This was a good time for the early 40. Shows were played April 30th at Rugby Hall to over 300 people, July 17th we played in front of the old arena during Beef and Barley Days opening for One-eyed Snake, The Decepticons and Premature. The last show with Holly in the line-up was played October 22nd 1999 without Jar due to loss of blood. By February 2000, Jar moved to Airdrie and only rarely jammed with his old 40 pals and by September 2000, Holly had moved to Lethbridge for post-secondary education. It seemed like the 40 was dead, so Clay and Cody tried other projects, like the short-lived band Lung Butter.
March 2002-November 2002-After a long hiatus, Clay, Cody, and Jar reunited one night to jam and get drunk. The result was the ultra-rare Drunk and Passed Out On The Toilet EP recorded at Hugh Sutherland School the next day hungover. After hearing how awful we sounded, we decided to practice. After a few months, Clay went to APRA to learn sound engineering, and we were supposed to make a CD with this dude from there, but his car hit the ditch at Crossfield during an insane blizzard. Clay and Jar missed him so the Basement Blues EP that resulted that weekend has all three members taking turns on the bass. One show was played with the two guitar players/no bass lineup, Meltdown at the Scout Hall on November 1st.
November 2002-May, 2003-The dude wasn't too mad about being left stranded in Crossfield, so he joined to play bass for the Shamrock Band Warz. We moved on to the second round, but lost to Abortion Grenade. We then played Romantika Pizza twice in the new year, and The Back Alley May 8th, before Jar decided to move to Dawson Creek. Jar came back to Calgary at the end of May to record Solar Powered Sex Machine, and took Clay and Cody back to Dawson with him, leaving Kris behind.
June 2003-August 2003-The 40 arrived in Dawson, quickly gaining a reputation of being wild and crazy party dudes. Many shows were played with various bass players, including Dbow, Uncle Andy, and Marty Party, but most noticeably Mandy Steward at Grizfest. The best gigs of this period included Webejammin, and opening for Dick Twang at the OK Corral. On August 9th the 40 returned to Carstairs and reunited with Kris to play Mayhem at the Scout Hall August 9th . That was the last show of that line-up. Clay and Jar left Cody in Carstairs and went on a two-week hitchhiking tour of B.C., sleeping under bridges and on mountains through the forest fires that were everywhere. Finally Rock and Roll Summer Camp was officially over, and on September 1st, Labour Day, Cody moved to Calgary, Jar moved back to Airdrie and Clay stayed in Carstairs.
October 2003-December 2004-With the 40 scattered like the wind, Cody needed someone to jam with. He called Kris, but Kris brought a guitar and not a bass. Cody ran into an old buddy, Phil Harrison from One Eyed Snake on 17th Avenue, so when Clay, Cody and Kris needed a bass player they phoned Phil. They started jamming with Jar and a decision was made to make the band five piece and the first five-piece line-up was born. After a winter of serious woodshedding in the basement, and testing the live muscle at The Back Alley April 1st, Inspected by 40 entered the studio June 7th, 2004 to record their debut album Cougar Bait.
January 2005-August 2005-On January 6th, 2005 Cougar Bait was unleashed to the masses at The Back Alley. With an album to support, Inspected played many shows for Rock and Roll Summer Camp 2005. Some of the venues Inspected by 40 played this year include The Black Swan, The Soda, The Underground, Union Jacks, The Distillery, The Flying Emu, The Canmore Hotel, Rendezvous pub in Edmonton, The Barfly, The Eldorado Lounge in Fernie, the Bankview Community Center, The Kiwanis Performing Arts Centre in Dawson Creek, and the Deer Run Community Center(where Inspected won the battle of the bands). Some of the bands Inspected by 40 played shows with: Sufferance, Occam's Razor, Verbal Deception, Katabasis, Skulldozer, Nebucadnezzer, The Blind Assassins, Deadcast, Necrobiosis, Realm of Chaos, Entropy of Earth, Decipher, Kincaide, Madam I'm Adam, Filosofy, Taut Awning, Absence of Empathy, The Last Act, and The Drive.
September 2005-March 17th, 2006-Inspected begins their hiatus from live shows. During this time K-ROK leaves the 40 to begin work on his new project Deadened. The split was one of those no hard feelings deals, and everyone wishes each other the best. Due to these circumstances, the 40 doesn't jam as much, and side projects proliferate. Notable are the unique Seven Deadly Grins, consisting of longtime 40 friends Lindsay and Sarah rocking out with Clay, who they call Satan. Short-lived was The Kryst Punchers a band with Cody on Rhythm and Vox, Clay on Lead Guitar (?), room-mate and friend Christian Paradis on Bass, and a kind fellow named Alex drumming. Formed for a gig that never happened, O.P.M (short for Other People's Music) was a classic rock cover band consisting of Jar on lead vox and guitars, Philthy on bass, Clay on drums, and new-comer Chris "Italian Stallion" Caldwell on guitars. After playing a party as a four-piece, the decision was eventually reached to return to the three guitar format, and "Italian Stallion" was invited to join the 40. A gig was booked: The March 17th CD release of "Shredfest" on The Greatest Underground Show on Earth at the Underground. This show had Inspected open for Katabasis, Decipher and Insidious, and is legendary for having K-ROK play with the 40 for the first song, and the Stallion symbolically taking up the torch in front of the audience for the rest of the set.
March 17th-December 16th, 2006- Summer 2006 was quite busy for the 40. In May Inspected played Philthy's graduation with New Samsin, in July the Underground with Sacred Ally and former member K-ROK's new band "Deadened", in August Clay pulled double duty and played a show with the Seven Deadly grins and the 40 at Vern's, in September Vern's had the 40 back, in October there were three shows: Rokktoberfest at Cowboys, where we smoked the competition to win the battle of the bands, the Distillery on Saturday the 28th(barstar hallowe'en), and Vern's on October 31st. The 31st was the 8th anniversary of Inspected by 40's first show at the scout hall in Carstairs. Then on December 16th the 40 took the long trip south to Union Jacks to play with Killing Fields.
December 16th, 2006-present- The 40 continues to write our next album, and with the addition of Cougar Bait to such important music download sites like iTunes and Napster, there is no better time to buy the album and/or tell your friends about Inspected by 40!
